The gasifier includes an insulated shell having a combustion chamber in which fuel is burned. A quench diameter has a liquid bath for cooling the products of combustion. A constricted throat communicates between the combustion chamber and quench chamber. An elongated dip tube provides the flow path between the two chambers, and has a quench ring positioned at its upper edge.
