Chloromethanes (I) are produced from the methyl chloride (MeCl) obtd. from esterification of methanol, which is washed with water and aq. alkali soln.. The novelty is that the prepurified MeCl, which still contains dimethyl ether (DME), is chlorinated, directly or as a mixt. with methane and/or other chlorinatable chloromethanes, at 550-650 deg.C for not more than 3 secs.. USE/ADVANTAGE - Enables the prodn. of higher chloromethanes (I) from MeCl, without the need for sulphuric acid washing to remove DME. The cost of disposing of the waste sulphuric acid is therefore eliminated and the HCl produced in the thermal chlorination stage is used in the coupled esterification stage
