A device for treating a liq. which tends to foam uses a gas to release a gaseous component from the liq.. The liq. (A) flows downwards over at least one tray in a column (2) through which the gas passes upwards. At least one foam-sepg. duct section, through which the released gas is made to flow, is provided in the column above the trays. This duct extends upwards from an intermediate floor, and its upper end is directed in a tangential direction and is located near the wall of the column. A U-shaped return pipe for the liq. produced by the foam separator leads from above the intermediate floor to a point above one of the trays, and pref. above the uppermost tray. The hydrostatic pressure difference in the long arm of this return pipe is greater than the pressure difference across the duct section. USE/ADVANTAGE - For the treatment of foaming liqs., and esp. for stripping or rectification of animal slurry, and partic. anaerobically fermented animal slurry, in order to release ammonia. Foam is effectively destroyed at little expense
