Rapid identification of Salmonella, and differentiation from other non-fermenting, H2S-positive or -negative bacteria, comprises treating the test culture medium with a reagent contg. an ester of 4-methylumbelliferone (4-MU), or other fluorophore, with a 7-10C carboxylic acid, this ester being specifically affected by bacterial enzyme. The resulting fluorescence is observed within 1-5 min. Specifically, 4-methylumbelliferone octanoate (I) is used as reagent, esp. impregnated into paper disks or cotton pads.
