A device for mounting plate-like elements, such as glass plates, that form an object, for example shelves, when several are mounted together, and that are at first temporarily held by the mounting device and then fixed, for example glued, to each other, has suction nipples capable of being removably fastened to the elements by vacuum generation, and components, for example bars, that can be removably linked to each other and upon which the suction nipples can be removably fastened. The suction nipples can be linked by flexible tubes (7) to a suction chamber linked to a suction pump. In each of the ducts that extend between the suction areas (4) of the suction nipples and the suction chamber is arranged a hand-operated, easily accessible check valve (8). The suction areas (4) of the suction nipples have a very small fixed gap, in particular approximately 0.3 mm wide, between the surface of the element (1) and the opposite surface of the suction nipple, so that the suction holding force can act very quickly when the check valve (8) is opened. The suction areas (4) of the suction nipples are connected to the flexible tubes (7) by a very small bore (9), in particular a bore having approximately 1 mm diameter, so that any pressure increase in a suction area (4) of a suction nipple cannot affect at all the remaining suction system, or only very slowly. The elements can thus be temporarily assembled in a quick, simple and precise manner.
