In-situ treatment of contaminated ground water - by forming slit shaped zones free from solids and treating water flowing through zones

In the in situ treatment of ground water, one or more solid-free slit-shaped zones are provided in the substratum, before and/or after the contaminated area, in the direction of flow, and water flowing horizontally through these zones is treated by the usual methods of water processing. Harmful substances in the water are stripped out in situ by introduction of gas, and the waste gas is fed to a separate treatment, or unharmful waste gas is allowed to escape. In treating liq. harmful substances with density less than 1 g/cubic m, the floating harmful matter or foreign matter, supported naturally or technically, is removed in concn. form from the water surface and fed to a separate treatment. In treating liq. and/or solid harmful matter with density above 1 g/cubic m, the harmful or foreign matter, sinking automatically or with assistance, is withdrawn in conc. form from the bottom of the solid-free, water-filled zone, and fed to a separate treatment. Naturally occurring microorganisms are activated and conc. by altering the medium, e.g., introduction of O2 and/or addn. of nutrients and/or of additional microorganisms, and/or by addn. of substrates for the growth of microorganisms for the breakdown of harmful substances in water, and mixed into the liq. vol. through corresp. devices. ADVANTAGE - The process can be controlled cheaply. Addn., transport, and distribution of substances, activation and enrichment of biomass, and alteration of conditions, are possible. Clogging of the substratum is avoided
