PURPOSE:To relieve the maintenance job by providing a database storing a configuration diagram of lines to connect an exchange and a terminal equipment to the system and referencing the database when a fault takes place in a line so as to identify and notice a faulty location. CONSTITUTION:While data communication is implemented between a packet exchange 1 and a terminal equipment 6 via a communication line 5, when a processor 2 detects a fault of the communication line 5, the notice of detecting the line fault is informed to a typewriter 3. Simultaneously, based on a line configuration diagram stored in a database 4, the processing unit 2 tests the line and a faulty location is identified from the result and displayed on the typewriter 3. When it is discriminated that various operation requests are needed to a terminal manager as a result of referencing the line configuration diagram stored in the database 4, an automatic telephone set 7 makes the request to a telephone set 9 for terminal manager via a telephone line 8.
