Cured surfaces, partic. of cams on camshafts, are hardened by remelting under an electron beam which is moved in two dimensions at high frequency. The beam acts in at least two adjacent surface regions with high-frequency periodic reversals. To achieve the intended depth of melting in the surface region which deviates from the ciruclar shape, the beam traverse speed and/or the energy transmitted is avried, without moving the energy source. ADVANTAGE - Minimal surface deformation and uniform depth of hardening.
