In the rapid heating of an exhaust gas cleaning catalyst (esp. a three-way catalyst of an i.c. engine) to an initiation temp. using a microwave source, the novelty is that a fluid medium (esp. the water vapour content of the exhaust gas) in electrical dipole form is heated in a microwave field and fed with the exhaust gas stream to the catalyst.
