The invention concerns sulfonyl urea derivatives of formula (I), wherein R<1> stands for optionally substituted alkyl or phenyl; alkenyl or propargyl; alkylamino or dialkylamino; R<2> stands for hydrogen, halogen, optionally halogen-substituted methyl, methoxy or ethoxy, an alklylsulfonyl group, nitro or cyano; R<3> stands for difluoromethoxy, trifluoromethoxy, bromodifluoromethoxy, chlorodifluoromethoxy or fluorine; R<4> stands for halogen, optionally halogen-substituted methyl, ethyl, methoxy or ethoxy or the methylamino or dimethylamino group; R<5> stands for hydrogen, alkyl, alkenyl or an alkinyl; Z stands for CH or N, provided that a) if R<3> stands for the difluoromethoxy group, R<1> does not stand for a di(alkyl)amino group, R<2> does not stand for an alkylsulfonyl group, and R<4> does not stand for a methyl or methoxy group, b) if R<3> stands for a fluorine atom and Z stands for nitrogen, R<4> does not stand for an alkylamino group. The invention also concerns their salts. The sulfonyl urea derivatives can be used as herbicides.
