The inverter for prodn. of an AC voltage of a specified signal shape has at least one transformer with a primary winding (2) and a secondary winding (3). The primary winding has at least two switches (4,5) assigned to it. A multiple of transformer steps is provided respectively with a primary winding (2) and assigned switches (4,5), all of which are connected with a control unit (8). The switches (4,5) are switched by the control unit (8), so that the primary windings (2) are fed with rectangular signals, between which respectively lies a dead time. The signals of the individual primary windings (2) are mutually displaced in time and their addition in the secondary winding gives a stepped curve approximately of the specified signal shape (sine wave). ADVANTAGE - Reduces HF harmonic and commutating loss to give good efficiency. Specified signal produced without large engineering circuit costs.
