[Also in Division F1] Apparatus for feeding flowable material for example molten metal to a utilization device such as a continuous casting machine comprises a molten metal container (13), Fig. 1 (not shown), connected by a pipe (21) to a reservoir in the form of a closed tundish (20). The tundish is interconnected to a continuous casting machine (31). In operation, gas pressure is applied to the container (13), which is housed in a pressure vessel (14), to force molten metal through the pipe (21) to the tundish (20). Gas pressure is also applied to the tundish to effect discharge of the molten metal through inclined outlet (27) to the casting machine. The gas pressures in the vessel 14 and tundish 20 are controlled in relation to the level in the tundish, which is maintained substantially constant, to effect a uniform flow of molten metal to the casting machine. The feeding operation may be effected automatically and incorporates the use of a level detector (not shown). The container (13) may be induction heated to maintain the metal at the required temperature.</p> |
