Novel catalyst compositions which contain a Group VIII metal and a phosphorus bidentate ligand with the general formula (R<2>)(R<4>)P-R<3>-P(R<2>)(R<4>) in which R<2> and R<4> are identical or different optionally polar substituted monovalent aliphatic hydrocarbyl groups and in which R<3> is a divalent organic bridging group which in the bridge connecting the two phosphorus atoms contains four atoms, of which at least two are carbon atoms and among which no two atoms are present which together form part of a single cyclic structure. They are particularly suited to the preparation of polymers of carbon monoxide and C3+ alpha -olefins. |
