Effluents from cellulose and paper pulp manufacture containing lignin are brought to a pH of 2-5 treated with a solution of at least one water-insoluble amine of M.W. of 250 and over in a water immiscible organic solvent of dielectric constant below 4.8 and the organic phase charged with organic and coloured matter is decanted. The organic phase may be regenerated with alkaline solutions. Exemplification is given of varying temperatures in the process, amines, organic solvents and regeneration agents. |
