PURPOSE: To provide a device for automatically starting a 'channel guide' mode operation in accordance with the absence of program information independently of a user's command in the picture-in-picture system for a television(TV) receiver. CONSTITUTION: When a video signal to be processed by the TV receiver does not include program information (i.e., includes no effective video signal or includes a video signal for displaying a uniform screen of black or an optional color), an automatic channel sampler system including a TV signal tuner 100 displays an array of inserted pictures. Each inserted picture is a still picture (i.e., a frozen picture) selected by tuning each channel in a channel scanning list. In an example executed by a VCR, automatic channel sampling is started in accordance with the detection of the end of a recorded video signal obtained from a tape or a signal generated from a tape end detector. |
