The invention relates to a device for controlling an automatic gearbox, particularly for a motor vehicle, of the type including means (1, 2, 3) for selecting the position of the gearbox, namely of the main operating mode of the latter (P, R, N or D) and the ratios (''3'', ''2'', ''1'') allowed in forwards travel, the means being connected to a unit (6) for processing data and controlling means (8, 14) for positioning the gearbox depending on the selection means and on the speed of the vehicle, according to at least one gear change law. This device is characterised in that the data-processing unit (6) is connected to means (17) by which the user can actuate at least one forced operating mode of the gearbox, in which the data-processing unit (6) determines permissible limiting ratios (gears) for the gearbox, with the aid of at least one gear change law, substituted for that of the means for positioning this gearbox. <IMAGE>
