PURPOSE: To prepare a backup file as necessity and to utilize the prepared backup file similarly to other files. CONSTITUTION: This file management system is provided with a readable/ writable main file system 111, many read-only dump file systems 109 and plural component file systems. Each dump file system is generated from the main file system 111 by dumping operation and stores the state of the main file system 111 at the time of executing dumping operation. A new component file system shares read-only storage elements with an old component file system. A space area is secured in an unwritten part of an additional optical disk for a read/write type storage element in the main file system. Thus the management system can execute the open, reading, writing, generation, and deletion of a file and the dumping and restoring operation of each file system.
