The cable laying system uses a water current fed through the cable sleeve (1) laid on the seabed, used for transporting the cable (9) along the length of the cable sleeve (1) by friction with the water flow. Pref. the cable (9) has a smooth outer sheath and is fed into the cable sleeve (1) through an annular sleeve (7) via a pair of driven insertion rollers (11). The cable sleeve (1) is coupled to a water pump (17) for providing the pressurised water flow along the sleeve (1). Axially spaced floats are attached to the cable, each having a dia. which is less than the inner dia. of the cable sleeve (1).
