<p>1,154,691. Coated polyolefin film. NATIONAL DISTILLERS & CHEMICAL CORP. 17 June, 1966 [28 June, 1965], No. 27253/66. Heading B2E. A polyolefin. film: has a primer coating thereon consisting substantially wholly of a copolymer of a vinyl ester of an aliphatic saturated monocarboxylic acid having from 1 to 4 carbon atoms with an unsaturated monomer of formula wherein R is hydrogen or methyl, n is 0, 1 or 2, and R<SP>1</SP> is -COOH, -CN, or -COOR" wherein R", is an alkyl group. A vapour-impermeable vinylidene chloride interpolymer-containing coating may be applied to the primer coating. The film may be or polyethylene, polypropylene or a laminate thereof e.g. a polypropylene core having polyethylene on both sides. The film may be treated e.g. by electrical discharge, prior to the application of the primer. The 'primer coat may consists essentially of a copolymer produced by polymerisation of from 85 to 98. parts by wt. of the vinyl ester with from 15 to 2 parts by weight of the unsaturated monomer. Examples of esters and unsaturated monomers are given. The thickness of the primer coating may be equivalent to from 0.15 to 15g. of copolymer per 10,000 sq. cm. The primer coat may be applied as an aqueous composition by dipping, spraying, doctoring or gravure coating and may have a solids content of 5 to 25% by wt. The aqueous composition may be an aqueous alkaline solution and may contain from 1 to 25% by wt. 28‹ Be ammonia. The vinylidene chloride interpolymer may contain 70 to 95% by wt. vinylidene chloride and 30 to 5% by wt. of one or more monomers copolymerisable therewith.</p> |
