The gameboard is divided into square blocks in a checker pattern, each block representing one of 355 offical ranks starting from the chief of gatekeepers to advance to the post of premier or a supreme member for state affair consultive committee. Each rank in a block is named by an old name with a translation in current Korean, the old name being expressed by Chinese characters and the ranks being arranged in the order of seniority for advancement. In play, the chessman proceeds with alternative castings of sticks (Korean yut) to be followed by another chessman for a competitor which removes the former on reaching tothe same post or overtakes the former to be followed by it. The four sticks in total gives from zero (0) to four (4) points in a casting for advancement. The first to reach the highest post wins the game. The players learns the Chinese characters expressed for the rank names with their translations in the current Korean.
