PURPOSE: To provide a starting procedures in which appropriate calibration of each device is conducted in accordance with the kind of an optical medium in an optical disk recording and reproducing device. CONSTITUTION: In the procedures, an objective lens is moved to the tip part of the radial direction of the medium, the lens is defocused at a fastest position and a laser circuit is calibrated so as to guarantee that the light beams from the laser do not destroy the recorded signals on the medium. Then, the kind of the medium is read from the medium and various additional initialization procedures are performed based on the kind.
