PURPOSE:To improve toughness by incorporating flaky Al2O3 crystals into an Al2O3 compsn. CONSTITUTION:A mixture of spheroidal Al2O3 particles with 5-90vol.% flaky Al2O3 particles having <=5mum diameter and >=1 aspect ratio is mixed with 3-50wt.% high m.p. particles having <=2mum particle size and <=2,000 deg.Cm.p. and 0.05-5wt.% sintering aid for alumina. The resulting mixture is molded and fired at 1,300-1,800 deg.C in an inert atmosphere. |
