The surgical instrument has a handle in which a driving shaft (16) is mounted. A chuck (1), which is free to rotate on the driving shaft, is provided with a quick clamping device (22, 8, 26) which enables a tool to be connected to the driving shaft. The tool shaft (4) has an end piece of polygonal cross-section, which fits in a socket in the driving shaft and thus rotates with it. At the same time it can be moved axially relative to the driving shaft, but the tool shaft is prevented from moving axially relative to the chuck (1).
