The invention relates to a process for the production of mouldings having hard, wear-resistant and chemical-resistant surfaces, comprising A. a base element based on a fibre-reinforced plastic, in particular a thermoset material, and B. an outer layer based on a metal or a ceramic metal compound, in particular tungsten carbide or chromium nitride. The outer layer is applied to the base element by physical or chemical deposition from the vapour phase in vacuo (PVD or CVD process). The mouldings are suitable as components of an apparatus or machine which are subjected to high tribological forces.
