A steering lock apparatus carries out the advance and retract of a telescopic steering shaft (30) with an electric mechanism (22) and locks said steering shaft (30) unrotatably by engaging it when it is retracted beyond a predetermined position. A steering lock control device comprises: a control unit (40) for receiving a signal output from an ignition switch (52) depending on key conditions and a signal output from a manual switch (51) for retracting said steering shaft (30), and transmitting an operational signal for operating said electric mechanism (22) in the retract direction of said sterring shaft (30) depending on both of said signals (S1,S2); a position detection sensor (42) for detecting whether said steering shaft is retracted to said predetermined position; and a shut off means for disabling the retraction of the steering shaft beyond the predetermined position in accordance with the signal outputs from both the ignition switch and the position detection sensor, thus preventing unwanted locking of the steering column and and improving safety.
