Polyvinylpyridine-n-oxides and their production

Poly-2-vinylpyridine-N-oxide having a molecular weight of at least 100,000 is produced by oxidizing a poly-2-vinyl-pyridine having a molecular weight of at least 400,000 with a per-compound so that the resultant poly-2-vinylpyridine-N-oxide has a molecular weight of approximately half the molecular weight of the poly-2-vinylpyridine. The reaction is preferably carried out in an organic solvent using hydrogen peroxide at a temperature of from 30 DEG to 90 DEG C. The 2-vinyl-pyridine may be copolymerized with other monomers.
