INVENTION: AIR FILTRATION UNIT INVENTOR: ARTHUR TIBBITS A portable top-loading air filtration unit adapted to receive sheet-like filter material comprises a housing having a compartment-defining housing portion and a cap. The compartment-defining housing portion has an open top but otherwise defines a compartment closed against passage of air. The cap is extensively apertured to define an air inlet permitting intake of large volumes of air and is releasably secured to the compartment-defining housing portion. An grate below the cap receives andsupports sheet-like filter materials which present a large effective cross-sectional flow area. These may include chemically-interactive filter materials such as activated charcoal and potassium permanganate oxidizing materials and also a HEPA filter for filtering minute particulates. An air outlet is formed in the compartment-defining housing portion below the filter support structure and an electrically-powered air flow producer is located within the compartment proximate to the air outlet. The producer has an inlet port receiving air from the compartment and a tubular exhaust port which is sealed to the air outlet. The effective cross-sectional flow areas of the air inlet, air outlet and producer exhaust port are selected to permit high volumetric flow rates while permitting more effective use of chemically-interactive filtering materials. |
