Shaped articles are produced by heating expanded graphite, by first pre-expanding the expanded graphite at 140 to 450 DEG C until a bulk density of 30 to 500 g/l has been reached, then filling a mould up to at least 50% by volume with thus pre-expanded graphite and then completing the expansion of the graphite in the mould by heating to temperatures in the range from 300 to 700 DEG .
