PURPOSE: To provide an image signal processing method/device which can reduce the quantity of information to be encoded. CONSTITUTION: The luminance image signals are supplied to a segmentation device 2 and a modal filter 3 which produce the area signals. Both image and area signals are supplied to a subtraction circuit 5 which produces a texture signal. This texture signal is encoded by an encoder 7. The area signal is supplied to an edge part map device 9 which produces an area list signal and an edge part map of the lower images. Then the edge part map is applied to a template via an element forecasting device 10, and the forecast value is acquired from a look-up table of a memory 12 related to the element value of a fixed position that is adjacent to the template. If the forecast value is correct, it is shown by a forecasting error signal that no error is detected. If an error is detected, the actual value is transmitted by the forecasting error signal or found out of the look-up table. The forecasting error signal is encoded by a 2nd encoder 14. |
