PURPOSE: To obtain a high conversion rate of ethylbenzene in the isomerization of an 8C-alkyl aromatic hydrocarbon and to control the loss of the 8C-alkyl aromatic hydrocarbon to a minimum by using a catalyst composition comprising a Group VIII metal and a zeolite containing alkali-metal and a binder material as a support. CONSTITUTION: A catalyst composition suitable for use in a process for the isomerization of an 8C-alkyl aromatic hydrocarbon, obtained from a Group VIII metal (e.g. platinum) and an alkali-metal (e.g. Na)-containing zeolite (e.g. mordenite) and a binder material as a support (e.g. pseudoboehmite) is formed. The amount of the alkaline metal is 2-3% wt.% based on the zeolite. By the use of this catalyst composition, a high ATE value of ethylbenzene, that is a high conversion rate of ethylbenzene, in isomerization of the 8C-alkyl aromatic hydrocarbon is obtained. In addition, the loss of the 8C-alkyl aromatic hydrocarbon is controlled to a minimum. |
