PURPOSE: To obtain a shell-and-tube heat exchanger in an HF alkylation apparatus for refining oil in which the heat exchanger is protected against corrosion and wear due to HF. CONSTITUTION: The shell-and-tube heat exchanger 10 comprises a tube sheet 16 having partition grooves 52 used to form joints with partition plates 34, 36, 38 contained within the exchanger head. The partition plates 34, 36, 38 define chambers within the head of the exchanger which direct the fluid through the exchanger tubes and which allow for the use of an unequal number of tubes per tube side pass.
