PURPOSE: To automatically and effectively perform machining work for a edge by adjusting an actual location of the edge of a workpiece and a directional parts displacement before performing the machining. CONSTITUTION: The surface of a workpiece 10 along the longitudinal direction of a tip part to be machined is searched by a probe mounted on a spindle 124, and an actual location and a characteristic value of the tip part are stored. Next, the probe is removed from the spindle 124, the probe is replaced by a grinding tool 155, stored data is accessed and grinding is performed in accordance with a machining program to make the grinding tool 155 follow along the tip part of the workpiece 10. As the grinding tool 155 moves along the tip part, the workpiece 10 and the grinding tool 155 are continuously redirected each other and the grinding tool spindle 124 and the grinding tool 155 are maintained in proper angle and position relations.
