Niobium-containing, silicate glass is used for preparing optical elements in optics and apparatus construction. It is derived at a melting temperature that is about 150 to 180 degrees C lower than that needed for glass production following by traditional method : with oxide blend. To produce glass (with a composition in molecules % of the following : silicon dioxide (50-80), diniobium pentaoxide (5-10) and potassium fluoride (5-35) or barium fluoride (5-30), the following raw materials are used : a solution of the silicon sol, finely-dispersed dust of diniobium pentaoxide (measuring between 5 and 10 microns), and a water solution of potassium or barium fluoride. Diniobium pentaoxide, which is homogenized into the solution, is added to the sol of the silicon acid by incessant mixing, thus ensuring silicon dioxide in the necessary quantity. A water solution of barium or potassium fluoride is added to the mixture, after which the solution is gelled. After drying and grinding, the dust-like mixture is melted at temperatures between 1,200-1,300 degrees C, with retention from 1 to 2 hours.
