A field emission element, including a gate (5) and an emitter (8) and capable of preventing any formation of an oxide layer of the element on a vortex of the emitter, in order to prevent a reduction in the emission current, instability in operation and an increase in noise. The gate (5) has a surface consisting of a material having resistance to oxygen bonding higher than that of a material intended for at least the vortex surface of the emitter, in such a way that the oxygen atoms and molecules containing oxygen, penetrating into the gate (5), can be captured by adsorption on the gate, so as to prevent the formation of an oxide layer on the emitter (8). <IMAGE>
