In an electronic unit (12) installed securely in the vehicle, a pluggable memory card (5) is locked mechanically so as to be withdrawable by authorised persons only. It has four memory blocks for time of day (1), road speed (2), and transverse and longitudinal accelerations (3,4) measured by separate accelerometers (10,11). A time-signal receiver (6) drives a clock pulse generator (7). All memories (1-4) are clocked synchronously and recordings are interrupted simultaneously when a standstill condition is detected (8). USE/ADVANTAGE - Esp. for accident investigations, all significant data are precisely timed and stored directly and separately in individual memories.
