The method is for measuring the profile of a cylindrical object, whose radius varies with axial position. A pair of sensors detect the radial position of the object surface on opposite sides of its axis of rotation. The object is rotated about and moved along its axis of rotation as the sensors are moved radially in synchronism with the object's motion according to data representing the ideal profile. The average value of the output signals of the sensors represents the deviation from the ideal profile. USE/ADVANTAGE - Esp. for measuring workpiece profiles in turning machine independently of linearity errors in the workpiece feed mechanism.
