The exahust pipe (5) from the engine (1) incorporates a lambda probe (6) wired to the electronic controller (2), and leads into a catalytic convertor (8) in which flat or approximately linear temp. sensors (TF1, TF2) perform integral rather than discrete measurements over a representative portion of its cross-section. Knowledge of the catalyst temp. removes any need to vary the engine operating conditions outside the optimal range to prevent overheating.
