In the process described, alkoxylation of compounds containing active hydrogen atoms using antimony pentahalides as catalyst is carried out such that first a catalyst premix is prepared by dissolving antimony pentahalide in a portion of the amount of the compound to be alkoxylated while maintaining a maximum temperature of 60 DEG C and a maximum antimony pentahalide concentration of 30 mol%, the catalyst premix prepared or a portion thereof is combined as the catalyst component with the remaining amount of the compound to be alkoxylated, and the starting mixture thus obtained is reacted with the alkylene oxide.
