The torque monitor uses a torsion element in the form of a spoked wheel (11), with every second spoke (28) separated from the rim (23) of the wheel (11) and connected to a slotted disc (15). A second slotted disc (14) is coupled to the rim (23). The spokes act as flexion rods and are bent to cause the 2 discs (14, 15) to twist relative to one another, causing the impedance in a HF measuring coil 816) to be modified via an eddy current principle. The measuring signal obtained from the coil (16) is a direction function of the torque. Pref. each of the discs (14, 15) has a layer of a conductive non-magnetic material with regularly spaced insulating zones.
