A first stage in mfr. of isocyanates involves reaction between a soln. or suspension of a primary amine (or its salt) and phosgene soln. The latter soln. is directed axially into a housing to impinge on the transverse disc projecting from a rotor shaft and then move radially outwards over the disc surface. During this movement to phosgene soln. contacts the amine fluid which, after entering a cap surrounding the phosgene inlet pipe, is sprayed via multiple apertures in the housing end wall, and via a stator disc, to impinge on the rotor disc as streams parallel to the phosgene but spaced therefrom in a regular ring. Both stator and rotor have concentric rings of projecting pins to promote stirring. A number of rotor/stator disc assemblies may follow alone the drive shaft.
