51-Purine nucleotides are prepared by culturing a microorganism in an aqueous nutrient medium under aerobic conditions in the presence of at least one hydrocarbon as the main carbon source. Purine bases may be added to the medium. Examples prepare sodium 51 - inosinate, 51 - guanylic acid and 51-adenylic acid using strains of Arthrobacter simplex, Corynebacterium hydrocarbocrustus, Candida utilis and Aspergillus oryzae on a kerosene base. Other genera and other hydrocarbons are specified.
