Peptidoglycan jomol having the characteristics listed below is new: UV absorption maximum at 286.0 nm; apparent mol. wt. of 4500, 3000 and 900; strongly hygroscopic; depending on residual water content, ivory-coloured and amorphous-crystalline flakes; 1 mg/ml aq. soln. has pH 5.5; weakly positive, pink ninhydrin reaction; can be coloured with orcinol reagent; protein content 1.4%; Rf values of 0.20, 0.45, 0.685, 0 and 0.54 with butanol-glacial acetic -water 4:1:1, benzene-glacial acetic-water 2:1:2, methanol-glacial acetic-water 4:1:1, CHCl3-MeOH 96:4 and ChCl3-MeOH 1:1; poorly sol. in non-polar solvent, very good solubility in polar solvents; detectable components (with relative amts.) are neutral sugars (glucose, galactose, ribose) (not greater than 1), amino sugars (glucosamine, muraminic acid) (3.5), amino acids (Ala,Glu,DAP), (4) (DAP 2.5), lipids (below 1), phosphorus (below 1); peptidoglycan structure in which the glycan skeleton consists of 10-80 N-acetylglucosaminyl -N-acetylmesamyl disaccharide units.
