An electrophotographic photosensitive member having a conductive substrate and a photosensitive layer thereon. The photosensitive layer contains a compound represented by the following formula (1): <IMAGE> (1) wherein Ar1 and Ar2 are the same or different and are each a substituted or unsubstituted bivalent carbocyclic aromatic group or a substituted or unsubstituted bivalent heterocyclic aromatic group; R1 and R2 are each a hydrogen atom, a substituted or unsubstituted alkyl group, a substituted or unsubstituted aralkyl group or a substituted or unsubstituted aryl group; and A1 and A2 are each a coupler residue having a phenolic hydroxyl group, wherein A1 and A2 are the same or different.
