PURPOSE:To obtain 1,4-butanediol in extremely mild conditions and good yield by subjecting succinic anhydride, succinic acid or gamma-butylolactone to liquid phase hydrogenation using a ruthenium based catalyst consisting of specific components. CONSTITUTION:Succinic anhydride, succinic acid or gamma-butylolactone is subjected to liquid phase hydrogenation using a ruthenium based catalyst consisting of a ruthenium compound such as ruthenium acetylacetonato, organic phosphine such as trioctylphosphine and phosphorus compound (e.g. phosphoric acid) expressed by the formula (X and Y are B, OH, halogen, alkoxy, alkyl or aryl) to provide 1,4-butanediol. The objective product can be produced in a homogeneous liquid phase system, mild conditions and high yield by using the above- mentioned catalyst. |
