发明名称 Improvements in the treatment of flexible nylon and glass articles
摘要
A composition suitable for treating flexible nylon or glass articles comprises an aqueous emulsion of an oxidized high density ethylene polymer prepared by oxidizing an ethylene homopolymer or a copolymer of ethylene with another a -olefine, e.g. propylene, butene-1, hexene-1, pentene-1, heptene-1, 4-methyl pentene-1 or 3-methyl butene-1, having a density of 0.935-0.97 g./c.c. and a crystalline melting point of 115-137 DEG C. prior to oxidation, and after oxidation having a density of 0.937-1.05 g./c.c. and a carboxyl content of 0.2-2.0 milli-equivalents per gram, and neutralizing the carboxyl groups in the oxidized polymer with 40-200% of the theoretical amount of a base whilst forming the emulsion. The emulsion may be prepared with the use as emulsifying agent of a morpholine, monoethanolamine, 2-amino - 2 - methyl - 1 - propanol, sodium, potassium or ammonium salt of oleic, stearic, palmitic or myristic acid, a salt of an alkyl aryl sulphonic acid, an acetate of a long-chain amine, a polyoxyethylene ester of a fatty acid, a polyoxyethylene derivative of sorbitan or a fatty acid substituted sorbitan or a polyoxyethylene ether of a long-chain alcohol or an alkyl aryl phenol. The oxidized polymer may be stabilized by the use of an antioxidant, e.g. 4,411-thio bis(6-t.-butyl-m-cresol) or N-phenyl-2-naphthylamine.ALSO:Flexible nylon or glass articles, e.g. films and fabrics, are softened by treating them with an aqueous emulsion of an oxidized high density ethylene polymer and drying the treated articles so that after drying 0.5-5% by weight of the polymer remains on the treated articles, the polymer being prepared by the oxidation of polyethylene or a copolymer of ethylene with other a -olefins, e.g. propylene, butene-1, hexene-1, pentene-1, heptene-1, 4-methylpentene-1 or 3-methylbutene-1, having a density of 0.935-0.97 g/cc and a crystalline melting point of 115 DEG -137 DEG C, prior to oxidation, and after oxidation having a density of 0.937-1.05 g/cc and a carboxyl content of 0.2-2.0 milliequivalents per gram, and neutralising the carboxyl groups in the oxidised polymer with 40-200% of the theoretical amount of base whilst forming the emulsion. The oxidized ethylene polymer may be applied to the materials treated as an aqueous emulsion containing as emulsifying agent a morpholine, monoethanolamine, 2-amino-2-methyl-1-propanol, sodium, potassium or ammonium salt of oleic, stearic, palmitic or myristic acid, a salt of an alkyl aryl sulphonic acid, an acetate of a long chain amine, a polyoxyethylene ester of a fatty acid, a polyoxyethylene derivative of sorbitan or a fatty acid substituted sorbitan or a polyoxyethylene ether of a long chain alcohol or alkyl aryl phenol, by spraying roller coating, brushing or dipping. After the application of the aqueous emulsion the treated material may be dried at 140 DEG C for 10 minutes. The oxidised polymer may be stabilized by the use of an antioxidant, e.g. 4, 4/yF-thiobis (6-t-butyl-m-cresol) or N-phenyl-2-naphthylamine.ALSO:A nylon or glass fibre, filament, yarn or fabric is softened by treating it with an aqueous emulsion of an oxidized high density ethylene polymer and drying the treated material so that after drying 0.5-5% by weight of the polymer remains on the treated material, the polymer being prepared by the oxidation of polyethylene or a copolymer of ethylene with other a -olefins, e.g. propylene, butene-1, hexene-1, pentene-1, heptene-1, 4-methylpentene-1 or 3-methylbutene-1, having a density of 0.935-0.97 g/cc and a crystalline melting point of 115 DEG -137 DEG C, prior to oxidation, and after oxidation having a density of 0.937-1.05 g/cc and a carboxyl content of 0.2-2.0 milliequivalents per gram, and neutralising the carboxyl groups in the oxidised polymer with 40-200% of the theoretical amount of a base whilst forming the emulsion. 4, 4"-thiobis (6-t-butyl-m-cresol) or N-phenyl-2-naphthylamine.
