Docket No. 1197-IR-PA A method and apparatus for treating fluffed high consistency fibrous materials with gaseous reagents provides a mechanical mixing chamber with a dwell time sufficient to allow reaction of a substantial majority of the gaseous reagent prior to dispensing the mixture into a porous bed reaction and degasification chamber. The gas flows through the porous bed of fibrous material in the reaction chamber until virtually all the active reagent has been consumed. This results in uniformly treated fibrous materials and efficient reagent utilization.
