PURPOSE:To maintain an instantaneous re-lighting function by controlling polarity of starting pulse voltage outputted from a pulse generating circuit according to polarity of alternating current source voltage in the case a power switch is turned on, and starting plural number of luminous tubes by half at a time. CONSTITUTION:A high pressure electric discharge lamp 1 houses plural number of luminous tubes 5a and 5b to be lighted and controlled according to polarity of starting pulse voltage. An electronic stabilizer 21 is provided for this high pressure electric discharge lamp, and alternating current source voltage 20 is supplied thereto through a power switch 51. Starting pulse voltage at a positive electrode or a negative electrode to be superimposed upon this alternating current source voltage 20 is outputted selectively from a pulse generator 22. Furthermore, by controlling selectively the polarity of the starting pulse voltage outputted from the pulse generating circuit 22 by means of a control circuit 52 according to the polarity of the alternating current source voltage 20 in the case the power switch 51 is turned on, lighting to maintain lighting probability in the plural number of luminous tubes approximately at 50% can be carried out.
