The invention relates to a safety device for applying the secondary brake of a motor vehicle including a seat (1) which can move between a position of normal use and a position for use when stationary, the said seat hiding, in an intermediate position, the secondary brake control lever (3), characterised in that it includes a device (11) for locking the said movable seat in the normal position, the said locking device being controlled by a knob (32) for unlocking the said seat and activated by a detector (22) detecting effective application of the secondary brake. Advantageously, the device (11) for locking the movable seat is of the electromechanical type, the knob (32) for unlocking the seat acts on an electrical contactor, and the application detector (22) includes an electrical contactor controlled by the displacement of or the tension in the secondary brake-actuating cable. <IMAGE>
