Applying border round rim of glass sheet - by forming e.g. thermoplastic tool with cavity, filling cavity with polymer, placing glass on main part of tool and setting the polymer hard

A hard setting plastic border section is applied to the edge of a glass sheet, where the border is bonded to the glass and has at least one flange in its profile to rest against one surface of the glass, the section being made by forming it. The forming tool used has a cavity with grooves to produce the flange and projecting areas. In the process this cavity is first filled with the plastic material, the glass sheet is placed with its rim on that material, and the rim plus plastic material are bonded together. A cavity (4) is formed in a pref. thermoplastic component (1) and is filled with the hard-setting polymer (5). The glass sheet (6) is then placed with its rim on the polymer. Using a suitable nozzle further polymer is applied along the rim of the glass (6) as well as over the edge (9). The forming tool used has the extra part (10) on which the glass rests conveniently, and the actual cavity (4) is larger than is strictly necessary for the flange. The complete assembly of glass, former and polymer is set hard together. ADVANTAGE - The process lends itself to mass prodn., even using robotics. It can apply border sections of widely differing profilÑ
