The adaptive regulating system has a main regulating loop containing an actual value indicator providing an actual value compared with a set value to control a regulator which is coupled to a positioning element via a dead zone element. The response thresholds of the dead zone element are adjusted between a fixed lower limit and an adjustable upper limit to ensure accurate regulation despite fluctuating operating conditions and environmental variations. Pref. the adjustment of the response threshold is effected via a sub network using a signal obtained from the regulating output signal and/or the regulation error.
